  • LIVE but not realy live

Why is there always the LIVE indication on my TV screen (NBC?) in the evenings when coverage is not LIVE? Do they assume that the TV audience is really that stupid?

  • #2
    Huh?

Why do you assume the coverage is not LIVE when they say it is?

Mind you, they mix in genuinely "live" coverage with flashbacks to earlier events, interviews, etc., but from what I have seen the "LIVE" sign (in the upper right corner of the screen) is not turned on then.

You just have to pay attention.

          A little light finally comes on . . .

Are you perhaps watching this from the Left Coast? Because we here in the land of EDT watched it "LIVE" a couple of hours ago, when it was happening.

It appears that you (basically everyone west of the Mississippi) do indeed have a complaint about "truth in advertising." I apologize for the error, which was not evident to those of us who have migrated this direction over time (as part of the Eastward Migration movement they never taught us in school). What we see labelled "live" is in fact "live." Here. And in Beijing. Apparently. :?

Three common problems with ``live'' signs that I have seen:

            1. They are used throughout any program with partially live content.
One example is the showing of a long jump that occured during a 10k
race twenty minutes after the fact, but still allegedly live.

            2. They are used in programs where a live stream is sent with a
            minor delay, say 30 minutes.

            3. If the original broadcast carried a ``live'' sign, excerpts show
in later programs (e.g. a daily summary) do not have the sign removed.
(Which implies that the sign is often not added dynamically to live
content, but stored in the underlying material---incompetence.)

                    LIve web results?

Since the 'Powers That Aren't' have totally FAILED to provide the TripleCast coverage I want and need, are we at least going to get live field event web updates? I need throw-by-throw, jump-by-jump info!!

This really deserves its own thread, but the official results page shows some hope for instance in the mens shot put if you click on the "reports" link you see a spot for each of the three shows. No idea if they will really be updating this throw by throw.

They are 12 hours ahead of EST or 15 hours ahead of me. So when anyone watches the broadcasts in the USA after 5:00 in the evening, they are LIVE.

Yes, it will be very interesting to see how live really plays out. The CBC has been advertising the Heats of the Men's 100 like crazy, so I imagine at least 3 of those heats will be truly live this evening ( Heat 1 is 9 hours/20 minutes from now).

we as members in the eurovision group can see
12 live feeds 24/7 from Beijing (without commentary and without commercial breaks).

Hopefully the feed for athletics will show everything happening in the Bird's Nest, even when the national shows is broadcasting elsewhere in Beijing.

I don't think that's a valid assumption. At 17:00 PDT, it's 8 AM in Beijing, so only events occurring at that hour would be live here if shown.

Since they did not put the athletics events on an unusual schedule for US TV, it appears that none of the T&F will be live. For example, the men's 100 final will actually take place at 7:30 AM, PDT, 10:30 EDT, but will be shown in the Prime Time segment Saturday evening.

Personally, I think "live" is over-rated. All distance fans know how irritating it is when they pan away from a race to show live field-event action, missing, in some cases, the decisive move in the race. Additionally, of course, live coverage wastes lots of time on false starts, waiting for the athletes to get back in their blocks, etc. Of course, US TV doesn't take very effective advantage of taped coverage anyway, but it COULD be done very, very well if they had a director who understood athletics.
