  • On the way to Beijing airport today....

....I sat next to the BYU diving coach, who was in town working as a judge. He's from Conroe, Texas (hey, you can find out all kinds of obscure things in Chinese traffic). He mentioned that was just up the road from Cut And Shoot.

And I said, "You mean the Cut And Shoot that's the home of ....."?

Of whom was he speaking? He was on the cover of SI more than once. Here's once:

I thought you were going to ask what Olympic medalist was from Conroe. Too easy?

        Homey

Roy "Cut And Shoot" Harris, who fought former Olympian Floyd Patterson for the world heavyweight crown.

Not to be confused w/ Cleveland "Big Cat" Williams, a Texan who had been shot before he faced Muhammad Ali for the world heavyweight crown.

Yeah, maybe it was Big Cat who was from Dime Box.

And, I realized later, I had erred, because I said to the guy, oh, Olympian Roy Harris. But he was not. I was confusing him w/ another guy who has the distinction of being the only guy in history to fight for the world title in his first pro fight.

            Who was that?

Pretty sure Cut-and-Shoot also had a high schooler as mayor just a couple of years ago.

It's a piece of obscure boxing trivia but Rafael Lovera also fought for a title in his first professional fight and lost to "Lumumba" Estaba. It was Lovera's only professional fight!

Are you talking about Ron Harris? There were two Ron Harris's who competed for USA in boxing at the Olympics in 1964 and 1968. Same class and they were not the same person and not related in anyway.
