During his WR competition at the Rome Golden Gala the camera pauses on Vigneron fastening his shoes and dragging longingly on one of those legendarily high tar Gitanes which were so pungent back in the less enlightened mid 1980s.
Who needs trackside coaches when you've got old smokies to help you through the tough times!

    Smoking with Mary Jane

I've seen Sotomayor quoted as saying that smoking (dope) alleviated fear of the bar.

    Previously discussed here.

For me, the most memorable is Thierry Vigneron, last man not named Sergey Bubka to set an outdoor WR in the PV.

Only in public buildings, restaurants, bars, etc. Still good to go in Nevada casinos though.

Of course, Brian Oldfield. At my first trials, some wag dedicated a "Brian Oldfield Memorial Ashtray". Of course, Brian, having gone the ITA route, could not join us Too bad, he was a hoot

Many High jumpers smoke and in fact my coach who was from Uzbekistan encouraged it as an appetite supresent. I had a training partner who could tell you the brand of Cigarettes of just about all the world class Jumpers from the late '90's
