Pardon me while I wax nostalgic.....

We went up to Knoxville for the Tennessee v Alabama-Birmingham football game over the weekend. Whenever you go to Knoxville, a must stop is to Sam & Andy's for a steamed sandwich, a concept which for some reason has not reached beyond Knoxville (except for a few instances).
Sam & Andy's is one of many eateries started by Greek immigrants to Knoxville. It was an institution when it was located on the Cumberland Avenue "Strip" on campus. I don't know why, but almost all of the independent restaurants on campus have given way to national chains. It is very sad. Even Sam & Andy's went under, in the late '90s. It was such a great place with a great college atmosphere. I think upping the drinking age to 21 killed off a lot of these places.
Thankfully, Sam & Andy's relocated to the Knoxville suburb of Farragut. It isn't the same, but the food is just as good. Sam & Andy's has signed photos from many of the great Tennessee athletes. Occupying the most visible location on their wall was an auotgraphed photo of the legendary Tennessee steepler Doug Brown. I asked the guy making my sandwich if he knew who Doug Brown is. "The best runner in Tennessee history." Only in Knoxville, in this state at least, would the name of the great Doug Brown be a household name. I loved it. He said that he actually saw Brown run in person when he was at UT.
End of story. I enjoyed it anyhow. And I'm sure all the Vols reading did, too.
