  • Stephanie Hightower running for USATF prez

This was posted yesterday on letsrun.com by masters hurdler Dexter McCloud:

    Dear Athletes,

As most of you know, Stephanie Hightower is running for the office of President of USA Track and Field. As the Chairs for the “Athletes for Hightower” Campaign Committee, it is our honor and privilege to be in the position to ask for your support on behalf of Stephanie.

As a former world-class hurdler and the current Women’s Track & Field Chair, Stephanie has represented and defended athletes best interests at every opportunity. Now here’s OUR opportunity to say, “thank you Stephanie, for all you’ve done for us”; by electing Stephanie as President, we can insure that athletes will continue to have a strong voice where it’s needed most - at the board level of USATF.

Now the only way you can cast your vote for Stephanie is to do the following:

    1) You MUST be a voting delegate for your association and come to the convention. Contact your association and let the President of your association know that you wish to be an athlete delegate, if you aren’t already. Most associations are clamoring for athlete involvement during the Annual Meeting.

    2) Because of the very important issue of restructuring, make your travel plans to arrive before the 1st day of the Annual Meeting, since this is when the initial election will take place.

If you have any questions, please contact us:

    Dexter McCloud
Co-Chair - “Athletes for Hightower” Campaign Committee
    [email protected]

    Sharrieffa Barksdale
Co-Chair - “Athletes for Hightower” Campaign Committee
    [email protected]

Let’s elect someone “for us, BY us”
Although I don't have great affection for the current USATF president, Bill Roe, I think Hightower is probably a huge step backward. She's already been accused of cronyism and financial misdealings.

How much more mismanagement can USATF take?

The election, BTW, will be held at the USATF annual meeting in December in Reno, Nevada.

For more on Hightower, see this earlier post:

    Also check out the reaction:

BTW, Barksdale once talked about making the 2008 Olympic team at age 47. I wrote about it here:

You posted here because you want WAR? What's your point? Does it really matter what you think?

I have no horse in this race, but what is the point of a message board if not to discuss such issues?

Indeed - it sounds like there's plenty of dirty laundry that needs washing. Informed opinions alway trump ignorant ones, so what's the problem with airing all this out?

No. USATF has term limits and he cannot run again.

Fine line between washing dirty laundry and digging through the trash.

There sure seems like there are some very disgruntled clientele (TCEO, MJR, letsrun) and I would hope that the innocent will be proven to be such and the guilty likewise. From an outsider's perspective it sure looks like a lot of smoke coming out of USATF. Is there indeed a fire? Perspiring minds want to know.

Current USATF Vice President Dee Jensen is the other announced candidate. It looks to be a very competitive race. I think it is safe to say that MJR is against Hightower.

So sad. It is the LDR and co. versus the perceived influence of the sprinters and co.

Unfortunately, too many untruths have grown from this.

gh, i think it is good to let it ride. It will get ugly but it serves a purpose. SInce this is one of a few boards that can carry the conversation to the general public. it is an important issue and USATF does not have a message board.

There is a serious power play going on and it is playing out in front of our eyes and affecting the sport in the US. Whether they are good or bad is yet to be seen.

Unless she starts squeezing out diamonds, which is unlikely & I'd like to know where the coal came from, that would be accurate. Bob Bowman is also running, last I heard.

Not sure I want to get go into all the trash here again. But Stephanie is entirely self motivated and only focused on 1 issue. Figure the rest of the riddle out at home.

Care to elaborate for the viewers at home?

MJR talk the issues or do not talk at all. Your riddles only serve to be self serving and negative.

You accuse the woman of a lot of things in that short post but say nothing factual. you are making gh look like a soothsayer.

clearly you disagree with her selection I am asking you to fill in the blanks for those informed and uninformed.

From my cheap seat I have not seen or heard anyone more qualified.

And oh she damn sure knows about events longer than one lap, believe that. Anyone on the USATF board HAS to know. LDR carries weight in the room, it does not serve anyone well to ignore them or what they do.
That being said, whoever is elected has to know about the events one lap and shorter. They are the bread winners, and like it or not when it comes down to governing this machine, and pleasing sponsors, they are not real big on personal records that garner you 11th place and no one saw you finish. They like medals and podiums. The circumstances dictate a weighted focus. That is not to say you ignore or neglect LDR, it means you make sure you keep what you have and strengthen what is weak.

I like Stephanie because she walks in the door with assets in pocket. She has been in a similar position before outside of track and changed that industry too. We definitely need a change, and she is it in my opinion.
