  • Most Sacred Venue in Sports?

The Most Sacred Record in Sports was a great thread.

    http://mb.trackandfieldnews.com/discuss ... red+record

So is (was) Yankee Stadium the most sacred venue in sports? How about Augusta, LA Coliseum, or Madison Square Garden? Hayward Field, Wimbledon Center Court, or Indianapolis Motor Speedway? St. Andrews? Lambeau Field? Churchill Downs? Others?

    Go at it.

Augusta National Golf Club. Especially now that the original versions of Wembley, Yankee Stadium, Boston Garden, and Kentucky's Memorial Coliseum are gone or no longer used.

Way to shut down a thread at the onset. Olympia is literally THE sacred sporting venue.

I'd put St. Andrews (golf) second.

ESPN has their list of 100 most important American sports venues.
              http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/st ... 919/venues

Track seems well represented, figuring in the following.
              3. Madison Square Garden
              8. Nike headquarters
              12. Los Angeles Colliseum
              15. US Olympic training center
              25. Boston marathon course
              56. Bay Area Laboratory Co-operative
              59. Hayward Field
              71. Franklin Field

Some of the venues on that list are absurd, like the Mall of America, which is there because it includes many stores that sell sports merchandise.

I agree that TF&N is the Bible of the Sport, but it is tough to understand how any athletic venue beyond Olympia can be regarded as "sacred" !

Stagg Field? But the important part of it doesn't exist anymore. I once would have said Soldier Field but they ruined that one.

BTW Bislett comes to mind. Letizgrund as well.

And one for the road: The Olympic Marathon in Athens.

In the UK (and a bit of bias) - Wimbledon and the Mall.

The sacred record thread had discussion about cricketers. Tell us non-British Commonwealth types about the Melbourne Cricket Grounds.

for me it´s the Olympic Stadium of Berlin....because it reminds me of the bullcrap going on in my country back in those days AND because Jesse Owens singlehanded defied what Adolf HItler was teaching and kicked his ugly butt...at least for the time of the games.

I admit that I have not read-up in detail on what went on during the
Berlin games; however, my overall impression sofar is that the
Hitler-Owens situation has been exaggerated over the years.
