  • New take on an old scam

got this e-mail today, titled Urgent Business Proposition:

    Dear American:

I need to ask you to support an urgent secret business relationship with a transfer of funds of great magnitude.

I am Ministry of the Treasury of the Republic of America. My country has had crisis that has caused the need for large transfer of funds of 800 billion dollars US. If you would assist me in this transfer, it would be most profitable to you.

I am working with Mr. Phil Gram, lobbyist for UBS, who will be my replacement as Ministry of the Treasury in January. As a Senator, you may know him as the leader of the American banking deregulation movement in the 1990s. This transactin is 100% safe.

This is a matter of great urgency. We need a blank check. We need the funds as quickly as possible. We cannot directly transfer these funds in the names of our close friends because we are constantly under surveillance. My family lawyer advised me that I should look for a reliable and trustworthy person who will act as a next of kin so the funds can be transferred.

Please reply with all of your bank account, IRA and college fund account numbers and those of your children and grandchildren to [email protected] so that we may transfer your commission for this transaction. After I receive that information, I will respond with detailed information about safeguards that will be used to protect the funds.

Yours Faithfully Minister of Treasury Paulson

Just about every type of scam in existence today was seen by O'Henry a hundred years ago. Take a look at some of his Andy Tucker and Jeff Peters stories. "Le plus ca change, la plus c'est meme chose".

Around 410 BC, Thucydides observed "The way most men deal with traditions ..... is to receive them all alike as they are delivered, without applying any critical test whatsoever".

I get them almost daily. Today's entry(I passed because it "offends my moral values" lol) -

        Dear Sir,

I am Dr.Dave Tomm, a medical doctor.A deceased client of mine, by name Mr. Lewis Parker, who hereinafter shall be referred to as my late patient, died as the result of a heart-related condition in November 2006.

I have contacted you to assist in repatriating the money left behind by my late patient before it is confiscated or declared unserviceable by the bank where this deposit valued at $4.8million dollars is lodged. This bank has issued me a notice to contact the next of kin, or the account will be confiscated because there is a government gazzette/mandate/authorising all banks to freeze or confiscate any account that has not been serviceable in a long period of time, this is geared towards capital flight for the economy.

My proposition to you is to seek your consent to present you as the next-of-kin and beneficiary of my named late patient, so that the proceeds of this account can be paid to you. Then we can share the amount on a mutually agreed-upon percentage;55% for me,40% for you the owner of account while 5% of the money is for all expenses that could come up during this transfer.
All legal documents to back up your claim as my late patient next-of-kin will be provided. All I require is your honest cooperation to enable us see this transaction through. This will be executed under a legitimate arrangement that will protect you from any breach of the law.If this business proposition offends your moral values,do accept my apology but if not, then contact me at once to indicate your interest, by giving me your telephone/fax number and contact address along with your full names and bank account details,so that I too can contact you.

Kindly send response to [email protected] ,
        Best regards,
        Doctor.Dave Tomm

Funny stuff, but back to reality: the City of San Francisco is facing certain bankruptcy (financial, that is, it's already morally bankrupt) within 10-15 years. Ironically the only thing that can save them is another earthquake, which has a 25 percent chance of occurring over the same time-span.

gh posted an amusng, if sobering, satirical take off on the scams most of us receive regularly, usually from some West African country.

I have been tempted to reply to one of these come-ons just to see how they propose to "legitimately" pass off a Comanche/Choctaw as next-of-kin of a deposed Nigerian minister.

Just let me have your bank account number and your PIN and I'll be glad to explain that to you.

Good posting. A few years back, I came across a Net posting describing various aspects of the Wall Street Crash of ~1930. Reading it gave me a feeling of deja vu. Amongst various similarities with events nowadays, was the statement that almost everyone was invested in the stock market, so that at a bad time when you wanted to sell, there were practically no takers. I am sure many economic pundits will tell me how wrong I am and what are the "safeguards" in place today.
Another thought: Does the contemplated buyout of a very important part of the private sector by the "public", mean the USA is a socialist type of country?

With the proposal to sell off the $700 billion worth(less or maybe more) stuff, doesn't this bail-out strike anyone else as a legalized ponzi scheme?

Legalized, yes, but the Ponzi Scheme, although disguised, is more straightforward and easier to understand

These things have been pests for years. The originators don't even go to the trouble of developing innovative, clever new pitches.

I've read that some people actually fall for these things! After a few more mind-numbing years on these forums, I may end up doing the same.

                            A lot of elderly women.

Not out of greed; they think they're helping someone.

Sadly, some religions do the same type of soliciting. Along with the you'll -go-to-hell-if-you-don't scare tactic. [Also used to "encourage" elderly folks to vote for certain candidates.]
