  • Oregon State Again humbles USC

Well, they did it again, 27-21 and USC had to scramble to get that and OSU had a field goal blocked as well.

So, Stanford looks a little better, Penn State's dismantling of Oregon State looks bigger and in a few days we will see if Utah also dismantles OSU and make the Pac-10 look like it may not be as good as the Big 10 after all. Well, are they as good as the Mountain West?

The idea of Hollywood Pete Carroll, all dapper and coiffed and serene and 'together', blowing a gasket after that loss (and esp. the one to Stanford last year) greatly amuses me. I actually do like him, but he gives off the same vibe Brady did last year, and every so often a tiny shameful piece of schadenfreude bubbles up in me and wants them to have to live down here in the real world with the rest of us!

i kinda have the same take on Pete Carrol.. He seems like a guy I would like to know in civilian life but he has trouble grasping the concept that USC does not have a divine right to victory.

Usually we have to wait till second half of season before USC become over-confident, complacent, unfocused (and beaten).

And in the "he who laughs last department," I just heard a CNBC analyst on Dan Patrick's radio show say that the Trojans may well make more money this way! (not that anybody is saying they would't trade the money for a national title)

          Based on these:

•Pac-10 (all conferences?) shares BCS revenue among its members. Before this loss, it was pretty much a slam dunk that the Trojans would be the only Pac-10 team in the BCS. So only one revenue stream. With the loss, other P10 teams now have a shot (albeit outside, one would guess).

•Trojans now probably end up in the Rose Bowl instead of the national championship. There's no premium for playing in the NC, but the RB, unlike all the other bowls, has an extra payout (not sure why, but that's what he said). So more cash there.

•Cost of flying/housing the whole extended Trojan family from SoCal to Miami would eat up any money they'd get from the game anyway. For the Rose Bowl they simply tell people to get in their cars.

Oh how blithely you write off the Stanford Red Tree Farmers from winning the conference!! 8-)

Please. Considering the SEC teams will do their usual job of cannibalizing each other, IF USC wins out they will still be in the BCS bowl against the SEC champ.

Just to clarify: all the scenarios I laid out were those of the guy on the radio, not me.

In the cannibalizing department, this in the SF Chron this morning:

                        <<Disparity at the top

Here are the AP ranking's top five teams, with the number of Top 25 teams remaining on their schedules.

                        1. USC - 0

                        2. Oklahoma - 4*

                        3. Georgia - 5*

                        4. Florida - 3*

                        5. LSU - 3*

*Every top five team but USC could face an additional Top 25 team in its conference title game.>>

This is an odd phenomenon that I've never clearly understood. What does it mean to be a "Big 10 fan" or an "SEC fan"??? I'm a UCLA alum and if I'm watching a game or a track meet between Arizona and Boise St., I would feel exactly ZERO affinity for Arizona, even though they are PAC 10. And I pretty much never root for USC football under any circumstances. It's really such an unnecessary, pointless and irrelevant exercise. Are there ever any actual competitions between, say, the SEC all-stars and Big 12 all-stars? In that instance, it could be relevant, but I don't think they ever do such a thing. It seems to be that it just creates a situation where there will be non-stop bickering, because there are so many unquantifiable variables in comparing conferences.

paulthefan, even with hours of craft at his disposal, can not even imagine that he could have put it any better. Im still waiting for Carrol to trot onto the field with a pink Izod, collar turned up.
