Please dont tell me the British believe that their greatest contributions to mankind are their variant on rock and roll.
I take exception to that sir! *waves bowler hat and black umbrella in disgust*
Well, we gave the world the English language, the industrial revolution, modern capitalism, penicillin, the telephone, the modern system of international trade, the Western concept of democracy, built the world's railways, we even gave the world the modern Olympic Games! (De Coubertin got the idea after visiting Much Wenlock). My forte is not in creating opening ceremonies out of all that. Still, providing the world with most of the best rock n' roll of the past 40 years is still an illustrious achievement.
Well, we also created the United States, but the jury's still out on how that one went!

Yeah, but for an open ceremony that rock and roll stuff looks pretty good, despite what paultheloon says.
Well, we gave the world
the English language - no, the Germans did (Anglo-Saxons to be precise)
the industrial revolution - all Europe did
modern capitalism - all Europe did
penicillin - OK
the telephone - Canada's AGB got it viable
the modern system of international trade - Phoenicians
the Western concept of democracy - ancient Greece
built the world's railways - and still use the same dang original one
we even gave the world the modern Olympic Games! - nope, France's DeC really did do it.
Helping to keep Canada from being American. and most of Canada from being French was/is England's greatest accomplishment.
You don't know what you are missing. You folks just had one of the most boring, pointless elections of all time. Just a few miles south we are having the election of the millennium!!
Don't forget to include Monty Python. 2000 Mounties and a couple hundred lumberjacks singing "The Lumberjack Song". An infield full of Vikings singing the Spam song. Maybe the Olympic flame could be lit during a mock crucifixion with 100,000 spectators singing (and whistling), "Always look on the bri-ight side of life...".

Seriously, that would be 1,000,000 times better than anything else. Half the world would be laughing and the other half scratching their heads in bemusement. An OG opening ceremony that's stopped just before the end by a police raid ... wouldn't that be amazing!

Agreed. I spent barely a moment watching the Canadian election, but I've seen as much SNL, and SNL on Thursday, and Larry King and Wolf Blitzer as I've ever watched in my life. Luckily, TV goes off automatically when Lou Dobbs comes on I believe I have now heard the phrase "Joe the plumber" more than any other phrase in the language, including track & field.
