    why was it obvious ?

a 5'10 gal with perfect sprinting technique up against mostly midgets, crushing them is what most observers woud expect
She never had perfect sprint technique.
    err...

she had bullet drive from blocks with head down for 20m

    perfect enough for me...
Yes but not perfect. Up and down on the spot for the last 20.

Someone should have coached her instead of medicating her.

And the next 80m were a mess.

nothing wrong with ben's start !

        it worked for him !

observers at the time said he had so much power to control at the start that he coudn't do it with a "military" up'n'down arm action but had to use a widespread arm cadence

i'd venure same reasoning applied to mj

people only started noticing a defiency in her gait when she lost to zana in '01 - left leg was splaying out - it had never done that before

        21-flat ???

        no way!

she was better over 100 than 200 - she was good value for 10.70 & off that the best she was going to run was double that, of ~ 21.40

It did when she wore the red and black at Rio Mesa, and it continued again at Thousand Oaks. Saw her twice at CIF State Meet.

i only saw her in wc in '01 ( on tv, when commentators mentioned her gait ), so i can't comment on any other prior races, but seeing as 10.84 was her best that year & she'd gone 10.7 in each of 4 previous years, her cadence may have been suspect all season

Scott Ostler in today's SF Chronicle:

-- Marion Jones didn't know there was something fishy in the "flaxseed oil" coach Trevor Graham gave her? That's like Bonnie saying she thought Clyde was using his ATM card to make all those bank withdrawals.

She ran a 20.8 split at the 2000 Penn Relays.

eldrick it worked for juiced sprinters only. but besides that, your theory would hold true if not for the fact that we now know she was coaced in part by CF. Seeing the start and race pattern it is not a mystery any longer. No longer a strange coincidence.

You reminded me of something too. She sat there telling us she had no idea. Well lets see, all of TG's positives were happening while she was there, so she trained with these folks. She actively sought out CF and claimed to not know he was associated with drugs. CJ and Tim were busted while living with her. LMAO

She would have had the 200 wr before 2000 had she made any type of technical improvement in her arm swing.

Her funny leg was known well before she lost, hwo do you think people knew to look for it. It was always there, including in 1997. Whenever pressed it was there.

On a side note, the power and explosion Ben possessed, any start would have "worked". What we do know is the folks that have successfully executed that start ave turned up snake eyes in the end.

it may have worked for juiced spriners, but there are plenty of sprinters who don't have ideal arm movements at the start - by your logic, all of them are drugged ?

as for charlie francis connection, that was latter in her career & not her coach in '97 when she burst onto the scene

the 200wr was highly unlikely - do i need to remind you again that she was better at 100 rather than 200 - to run 21.3 wouda required 10.65 ability & translate that ability perfectly to 200

it may have been well known to you she had a funny leg, but it wasn't obvious to most - the commenatators noticed it in '97 not because they were looking for it, but because it was so damn obvious on the replays !

besides, obvious when pressed hardly holds as beween '97 - '01, she hardly, if ever, was pressed !

as for ben's start, my gut feeling is that francis believed that if he tried to instil an orthodox action in him, that might have upset his start ( veering to one side or another ) - straight-up action is great if you are guaranteed to move out of the blocks in a straight line, but if you are not likely to do that, then a widespread action is better to allow a straight line start

you have to add ~1.0s for open race conversion

Yet, she (and Montgomery) sought Francis for reasons neither legal nor ethical, AND did so in late 2002 -- two years before she was to have been on EPO.
