      I believe Yank has simply become shorthand for Yankee, a catchall term for people from the USA.
      However, in my long ago youth in a southern state, Yankee was a derogatory term reserved for those from non-Confederate states. Thankfully, although frequently spoken in jest, in most locales the word no longer is necessarily intended as an insult. but I could probably find you an exception..
