I believe it was a French colony and part of the Sudanese Republic when I was a kid. That has changed since African Independence during the early 1960s. Thank you Time magazine for the geography lessons. Used to read it every week along with SI.

40. In the West African nation of Mali. It is at the intersection of major north-south and east-west caravan routes, so in its heyday it was almost literally the crossroads of Africa. On the map these days it often carries the French spelling of Tombouctou.
