  • Jennifer Figge is the latest Rosie Ruiz

I didn't pay much attention to the story when it was first reported over the weekend, but as soon as I saw the numbers 2100 and 25, I knew something was up. This woman's poor math skills prevented her from even being able to tell a lie that was believable. What motivates people like this?

I work with a guy like this who, when he was first hired, told all type of stories about what a great distance runner he was back in the day. He claimed to have competed at the elite level for a while and was training partners with Joan Benoit. I guess he didn't know that I was an avid track fan, and then one day he made the mistake of being specific with his lies, when he said that he had run a half-marathon in one hour. Of course this went over everyone else's head except mine, and I immediately asked him to repeat what he had just said, probably with an incredulous look on my face and in my tone of voice. Sensing that he had stepped into it, he hesitantly repeated the lie, at which point I told him that I found it hard to believe that there was a American distance runner of his caliber and age (he was born in the mid-60's) that I had never heard of, and I asked to name some of the major meets and road races that he'd competed in. For the next five minutes he started walking back his story, to the amusement of everyone else who was in the room - "it wasn't a half-marathon, it was only 13 miles, it may not have been one hour, but an hour and five minutes, he never competed at the big meets and races because he was always injured."

Figge's story invokes a gallows' humor.

"Mommy, mommy, I don't want to go to Australia, I don't want to go to Australia."
    "Shut up and keep swimming."
"A beautiful theory killed by an ugly fact."
    by Thomas Henry Huxley
