My dad (RIP) was born in a small town in Central Alberta in 1912. I have just been reading (re-reading) some of the notes from families, and came across this gem....
It's about a fellow named Dan Descheneau, a confirmed bachelor from that area and that time, probably in the late 1920's (perhaps after Percy Williams and Amsterdam and 1928 ?).
.... Dan was a good sportsman, taking part in most events. He won most foot-races, and had many a close duel with Reverend Goddard. One such time, at the beginning of a race, Rev. Goddard noticed that Dan had spikes on his shoes. The Reverend protested, saying that is was not fair, to which Dan replied, "Well when you get your help from above, I have to get mine from below."
