  • North Korea threatens to wipe the US off the map

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090624/...koreas_nuclear

Only posting this to quote a guy I heard the other day:

"If they wanna launch an attack on anybody with their 1960's weaponry, they better be prepared to get a schooling in 21st century ass kicking."

Why are Americans so obsessed with tinpot dictators, while the major players closest to them (Russia, China, India and Japan), with presumably more to lose, don't seem to care?

The only reason these clowns are constantly yapping is because we pay attention to it. If it makes them feel good, let them do it. As Winston Churchill once said, "It's better to jaw-jaw than to war-war."

Exactly. North Korea, above all, wants to survive--in all its one-party socialist glory. Attacking anyone would, very likely, result in the non-survival of the regime. Ergo, they are yapping just to get us to give them things.

I have seen "socialist glory" regimes galore. North Korea does not resemble any of them. For example, even supreme dictators like Lenin, Stalin or Mao would not transfer the power to their son and now, to the grandson. This is a totally different animal and I, personally, have a hard time understanding their motifs. They starve and yet, they spend all resources on (usually nonfunctioning) high tech weaponry. You can't even compare to Cuba. Castro has been pretty much forced into the corner by the embargo. North Korea has been given numerous opportunities to shake hands, Castro has not.

Point taken. I was being ironic, but you're quite correct that NK doesn't represent many/any of our "usual" 20th socialist states. It has the added "qualities" of extreme paranoia, geographic and cultural isolation, a rampant cult of personality, and an unusually extreme suppression of individual rights. Not an enticing combination on any level... I still don't honestly believe they intend to nuke Seoul, or Honolulu, or any other place. To do so would be to risk extermination.

Agreed. To be honest, I really don't see their capability of hurting anybody. South Korea or Japan, perhaps, a big maybe. As jazzcyclist said, tinpot threat.

"If the U.S. imperialists start another war, the army and people of Korea will ... wipe out the aggressors on the globe once and for all,"
Especially in the context, it may be easy to read that as "if US gives us any halfway decent excuse to nuke them", but that doesn't really make much sense - as repeatedly pointed out, that would almost certainly end up with North Korea reduced to rubble. They aren't that stupid. Couldn't it simply be that they really are afraid of US starting a war (a rather sensible fear, given US history of invasions - most recently of Iraq - the ongoing hostility between the two countries and the fact that such a war would, as noted above, almost certainly end up with North Korea reduced to rubble) and want them to know they're prepared?

I'm not a big fan of North Korea, quite the contrary, but I don't read this as "oh, by the way, we'll bomb the US unexpectedly some time next week." (Anyway, if they wanted to nuke the US unexpectedly next week, what would be the point of telling now? Did the US tell Japan back in '45 they were going to be nuked unexpectedly the next week? You don't go around shouting "we have nukes" at the top of your voice because you're going to nuke somebody. You do it because you don't want somebody to attack you.)

What does Korea think the U.S. would do if it ceased it's nuc's and stop threatening? :?

I don't think, anybody knows. They are the most unpredictable regime in my memory.
