18TH MACCABIAH GAMES TO BRING WORLD-CLASS ATHLETES TO ISRAEL, JULY 13-23

New York - July 2, 2009: The 18th Maccabiah Games, the third largest sporting event in the world, will once again bring world-class athletes from more than 60 countries to Israel from July 13-23.

The 18th Maccabiah Games will be the biggest ever, attracting 10,000 athletes and fans from Israel and around the world to Tel Aviv. The festive opening ceremony will pay tribute to Tel Aviv-Yafo, the first Hebrew city, which hosted the original games at its port and old municipal stadium in 1932.

American athletes participating in the games include Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast Mitch Gaylord and world record-holding Olympic swimmer Jason Lezak.

"The Maccabiah Games is a long-celebrated event that draws some of the world's best athletes to compete in Israel," says Arie Sommer, Commissioner of Tourism, North and South America. "This year's competition will add some extra excitement to Tel Aviv's summer-long centennial festivities."

The Maccabiah games will culminate with a massive beach party, with Tel Aviv-Yafo's beach strip decorated according to the different nationalities of guest athletes.
