    I thought that I read that FIFA has a contingency plan in place if South Africa can't put it together. Move it to a European country, I think.

    But Mexico still had 3 years to organize the event. With just 1 year to go, it can't conceivably be done.

    Wouldn't be surprised to see FIFA pull the WC out of South Africa. Wouldn't be the first time. Colombia couldn't get it together in '86 if I recall and they moved it to Mexico.

    It is in the best interests of FIFA (and, of course SA) to make this happen, so watch how FIFA subtly (or not) arranges for the infrastructure to 'happen'. FIFA is VERY powerful (moreso than the IOC), so odds are fixes are in the works. Just look at how many Olympic hosts seemed hopeless 1 year out (Athens!).
