  • Nike working the system in college basketball recruiting

Tennessee just lost a men's basketball commitment over the weekend. All was fine with UT and Josh Selby, a top ten player, until he visited the LeBron James skills camp. There, he met LeBron and the shadiest person in all of basketball (and that's saying a lot), "World Wide Wes" (William Wesley).

The attention blew Selby away obviously and now he wants to go to a Nike school. Unfortunately, all of this is legal. LeBron can send Selby all the gear he wants to send. There are NCAA rules prohibiting supporters of a school from being involved in recruiting -- or so I thought -- but I guess World Wide Wes is able to get around them.

Gary Parrish, writer for cbssports.com, said on radio that World Wide Wes is making a mockery of the system. "He walks across the court at halftime of games now. He's in locker rooms now."

Parrish mentioned World Wide Wes asking a recruit who is favorite rapper is. Jay Z. World Wide Wes gets on the phone and dials up Beyonce, who hands the phone to Jay Z.

All of this shady, unethical behavior is being financed by the shoe companies, especially Nike. Sonny Vaccaro (no angel himself), who started with Nike, then went to Adidas and then Reebok, said that the NCAA could easily rid college basketball of the shoe companies. He was asked how. "How? By making it illegal for college coaches to receive money and merchandise from the shoe companies. Problem is, you'd still have the summer camps and the World Wide Weses around.

This is mainly why I can hardly watch college hoops anymore. It is without a doubt the smarmiest of all college sports.

Funny that you mention Vaccaro. I was just reading Yahoo's headline story on how he orchestrated the class action lawsuit by former college stars against EA Sports for its college hoops video game.
