The Boston area continues its long history of racial issues (and no, they are certainly not the only area, by a long, long way). Nice article in the SF Chron today about the local guy who was the first black player on the last major league baseball team to integrate - Pumpsie Green with the Boston Red Sox, in 1959.

Would be interesting to know what the real truth is. Had Gates shown his ID up front, this would never have happened. The cops were doing their job in investigating a possible break-in on Gate's house.

Solution: Videotape or audiorecord the event like they do in cop cars. The truth is very enlightning.

As always, the truth is somewhere in the middle here.

I'm sure Professor Gates would want the police to respond if someone saw two men trying to force open his door and it WASN'T him and his friend. He may have been tired from his trip home from China, and not in the best mood, but all he had to do was respect the officers trying to protect HIS property, and shown ID without raising Cain.

By the same token, regardless of how belligerent Gates became, once the police ascertained it was his home they had no business arresting him, unless he became a threat, whcih I have not read he did.

Who's to say Gates didn't have his ID @ the ready? There's both sides to this story and then there's the truth. Irregardless, keeping stopp'd by the police WB is a all to common occurance no matter where in this country one lives (whether affluent or not so affluent neighborhoods).

By the time police arrived, Gates was already inside. Police say he refused to come outside to speak with an officer, who told him he was investigating a report of a break-in.
"Why, because I'm a black man in America?" Gates said, according to a police report written by Sgt. James Crowley.

                      Gates Tells His Side

You be the judge based on what the officer has said, and what the prof. says:

That's the police version. Gates has his version of what occurred:

                        http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32010985/ns ... ethnicity/

"Gates said he turned over his driver's license and Harvard ID — both with his photos — and repeatedly asked for the name and badge number of the officer, who refused. He said he then followed the officer as he left his house onto his front porch, where he was handcuffed in front of other officers, Gates said in a statement released by his attorney, fellow Harvard scholar Charles Ogletree, on a Web site Gates oversees, TheRoot.com"

I'm not trying to getting in a **** match, but needless to say, it's a sad occurance that happens all to often to people of color (especially Black men) in this country.

And as I said, the truth is somewhere in the middle. I doubt very seriously Gates all but offered those cops cookies and milk, which is the impression you get from his story, and been arrested for it.

As has been said, it's a shame for all involved there wasn;t a cruiser-cam to catch it on tape.

Unless the police officer parked his cruiser on Gates' front porch, I'm afraid the cam wouldn't catch much.
