Jeez, just ask any football coach and he's got SEVERAL 4.3 guys - ALL presumably faster than Mr. Bolt. It's only Usain's height that might make him a wide receiver prospect. Does he have hands? :roll:

In recent years, I think we've seen enough football players with serious track credentials compete at the NFL Combine to be able to say that those times probably translate pretty well. In track, you have a slower timing system since the runner must react to the gun, but at the combine, you have a slower running surface and you don't have starting blocks. If I had to guess, I would say that you would have to add about 0.1s to a combine 40 time in order to approximate what that athlete would do in a track and field 40.

Yeah, there used to be .5 sec spread, because the hand-timed clock started when the coach reacted to the player running. Now typically the clock starts when the player's hand leaves the stating pad and ends with a beam broken (which may or may not be the torso). But, to give football its proper due, there really are some football players that have tremendous acceleration and CAN hold their own for 40 yards. In football the most important 'time' is from the first step to the tenth step, and there are indeed some amazing runners in the NFL that can do that just as well as any elite sprinter.

Ha.. Pryor's 4.33 is nothing compared to what my young Bruins are doing. Incoming Freshman Damien Thigpen clocked in at 4.28. Fellow incoming Freshman Randall Carroll ran a 4.30.

Unlike Pryor, though, both Carroll and Thigpen have solid track credentials. In the HS track season a few months ago, Carroll repeated as 100 and 200 CA state champ, running a legit 10.30 in the process, and Thigpen, a small and quick dude, ran a 21.31 for 200m as well as a 6.33 for 55m.

Having said all that, however, ALL of these times are absurd--no reaction time, likely hand-timed by the redshirt-freshman 4th-string QB and no wind considerations. Nonetheless, I'm happy that UCLA will have some speed, even if it's not actually 4.2 speed.

Has it never occurred to them at the combine to have the players race against each other? So they can put them in order of who is the fastest? Like in a race?

Also they're no just timed for the 40 during the 40. They clock their 20 yard distance as well for a purpose.

I just came across this ESPN video. Apparently, ESPN went to Trindon Holliday during the Olympics to prognosticate on Usain Bolt's football prospects.
