Objective refers to actual existence or reality.

So I agree that the numbers used in figuring the BCS are objective in that the numbers are real numbers, but the ways those numbers are weighted and equated include all sorts of purely subjective judgments by the people who create the BCS rankings and the entirely subjective non-computer polls that make up the AP and coaches polls that are part and parcel of the BCS data. So the results are simply theoretical constructs, not actual reality.
Objective - undistorted by emotion or personal bias; based on observable phenomena
Originally you said that the power rankings were subjective, which is pure bullshit. Now you've conveniently changed the subject to talk about the BCS rankings, which I didn't mention. Of course the BCS rankings are subjective, since two thirds of the formula is comprised of the human polls.

Why wouldn't you have picked Boise State over Oklahoma or Oregon? They were ranked higher than both of those teams at the time they played them.

Even the professional sports have some subjectivity involved due to scheduling. The only purely subjective way to schedule would be to have every team play every other team the exact same number of times the way PAC 10 and the Big East decide their conference championships. Obviously that's not feasible for the NFL since it would demand a 31-game schedule, not to mention college football which would call for a 120-game schedule under a purely objective scheduling system. However, it is feasible for the NBA and MLB.

Does Boise's season-long schedule match up with Florida's? If Boise had played Florida's schedule this year would they be undefeated? No way.

But in considering only non-conference play I'd give the nod to Boise - of course they scheduled some sure-wins - but they also played and beat Oregon, another top 10 team at this moment. None of the other undefeateds wanted any part of playing an Oregon, or even a Boise, in non-conference games.
I think Alabama's season opening opponent, Virgina Tech., is traditionally a more formidable team than either Oregon or Boise State. I would also say the same thing about Florida's season ending opponent.

            I agree.

If anyone is going to beat Florida or Alabama, they'll be doing it on their own. Because it's clear any close calls are not going to go against the Chosen Ones.

            • I just heard the phrase "he's got world-class speed" used correctly in a telecast for the first time in my life!! Jeff Demps just outran the defense on a simple Gator pitch play.

              • Charlie Weis will not survive this Navy loss...unless somebody they really like isn't available this year. Some guys actually live up to their contracts though I can't think of any at this time.

Brian Kelly is tops on the list - bad news for Cincinnati. There were rumors he would be offered the job last year, and I have it on good authority some Notre Dame Suits had a meeting with Kelly in a local hotel while Weis was twisting in the wind. A day after Kelly professed he wasn't going anywhere this year, Notre Dame backed Weis for 2009.

Now, make of that what you will, but that's what happened. However, if I'm Brian Kelly I'm not so sure Notre Dame as an independant offers him the same competitive opportunities UC does as Big Dog in the Big East. After all, Mark Dantonio thought Michigan State was a step up from UC too.

Notre Dame has been a graveyard for many a bright, young coach. Hopefully Kelly realizes what Dantonio didn't - the grass is always greener, until it's not.

This fix is in for Alabama and Florida to meet in the SEC Championship game. I'm guessing that the SEC will reprimand the referees or perhaps suspend them like they did when they stole a game for Florida, but everybody can see what's going on this year.

So you don't think it was used correctly when it was applied to folks like John Capel, Leonard Scott, Trindon Holliday and Xavier Carter?

                          • Guru, it would appear that your Bearcats are one of the last five teams standing since LSU, Oregon and Iowa were all eliminated today, and Boise State played too weak a schedule to receive serious consideration.

Florida/Alabama vs. Texas seems very likely.
