That was my initial reaction too-seriously. I think I heard it on ESPN radio this morning. He said something like "it would be a mistake to assume that Bradford will be the top pick. Jimmy Clausen is making noise"...or something like that I believe.
Then in reflection I thought you know what...Clausen hasnt been bad. Not at all. And its hard to figure where his talent may project. I mean we know what Bradford can do and I dont believe he moves as well as Clausen.
My question to the playoff jihadists is who is going to pay for the goody bags (playstations, X-box's, digital camcorders, digital cameras, portable DVD players, $750 Best Buy gift certificates, flat screen TV's, laptops, blackberries, etc.) that the players now get from the bowls if there is a playoff?
The same people who pay for it now... Sony, Microsoft, Best Buy, LG, Toshiba, Research In Motion, etc.
Those things aren't bought by the Bowl people, they are freebies from the companies, which pay for it from their promotion/product placement account. These companies want these guys (who are looked up to by fellow students, friends, relatives) to use their products so others will emulate them and purchase said products.
These companies won't give a hoot whether it's a bowl or playoff game. But overall, a frivolous, irrelevant argument for keeping a flawed system intact.

I know who pays for the toys, but you obviously don't understand how the system works. The NCAA runs every championship in college sports except for the 1-A football championships, which is essentially run by the big corporations that you've mentioned. In return for getting to plaster their names on the bowls and being included in any and all bowl advertising, they give the schools millions of dollars and give the athletes and coaches goody bags worth up to $2000 each. Did you think that these corporations were doing this out of the goodness of there hearts, and that they would be just as generous to an NCAA-run system without their name plastered everywhere? And since the NCAA hasn't relented to the corporations in having the naming rights for the NCAA basketball tournament, why would they treat football any differently? Why don't the Sweet Sixteen, Elite Eight or Final Four participants get goody bags? Look at the BCS's homepage and the NCAA's homepage and you'll see what I'm talking about.
For the record, I am against any system that might leave the athletes worse off financially and/or physically than they are now. Of course the playoff jihadist couldn't care less about the well-being of the athletes, and the physical toll that four brutal playoff games would take on them, as long as they get entertained. Having said this, I'm open-minded to any system that doesn't come at the expense of the athletes.
But it's OK for Div. II "student athletes" to have playoffs, yes? The death rate there must be appalling.
I have to admit that I'm surprised by your post, Garry. Not only are you challenging my sincerity and/or logical coherence, but you also seem to be conceding that you don't care about the well-being of the athletes. As for the question you've posed, since divisions III, II and I-AA football are all money losers, they're hardly being exploited, are they? How much revenues were generated in division II football last year, anyway? You and I both know that generally speaking, division II football players play college football for entirely different reasons than the blue chips athletes at I-A schools. I've participated in 5K (Carlsbad) and 10K (Crescent City) road races in which elite distance runners were also participating. Was I being exploited because I didn't have my expenses paid and get an appearance fee like the elites did?
Did anyone else see the Oregon- Boise State game? Of course Legarrette Blount deserved to be disciplined, but I think Byron Hout deserves to be punished also. Why provoke someone who you've just beat? Where's the sportsmanship?
I just read that and totally agree. Blount is out for the SEASON! Hout needs at least a 2-game suspension. Otherwise taunting like this is just fine.
Looks like Blount will be back this season after all.

Good news! Now that Oregon has realized that they overreacted, what are the chances that Boise State will realize that they underreacted and give Hout the punishment he deserved?
Boise State defeated division II UC Davis yesterday 36-14. And don't forget that they played I-AA Bowling Green earlier this year. When you're in the WAC and you have a division II team and a division i-AA team on your schedule, then you don't deserve a shot at the national championship no matter how the season unfolds. I don't ever recall LSU or any other SEC team ever playing a division II team nor have any of them played more than one non-division I-A team in one season. I guess next season Boise State will schedule a division III team and maybe one day they'll even play a high school team.
There's something wrong with a system that ranks 5-0 Boise State 6th and 5-0 Auburn, with wins over two SEC teams, 19th. On the bright side, at least the coaches punished Boise State for playing a division II team by dropping them from 5th.
The Sunshine State (it's raining today) ain't so sunny. Tebow is not cleared to practice as LSU - in Death Valley - looms, and even the Tally paper is asking for Bobby's head! Meanwhile, the University of S. Florida (which is actually in west Florida - Tampa) is undefeated.
So I'm doing my daily perusal of USA Today (I spend a little more time in the Sports section, natch), when I happened to see the NCAA football conference standings and . . . lo and behold . . . it's a MIRACLE . . . there sits STANFORD in first place of the PAC-10!!! They are 3-0 in conference and second place (Oregon) is only 2-0. That may seem like a small distinction to y'all, but to me it was as if I had died and gone to Sports Doofus Heaven where are YOUR teams win all the time! I immediately cut it out, put it in my scanner/printer, blew it up 400% and will proudly tape it to my office door tomorrow for the all the world to see and tremble in awe at the mighty, mighty Red Tree Farmers!!! Go Thunderchickens!!!
