Huh...I'm surprised that doesn't raise eyebrows.

(Coachella Valley) Arabs vs. Moors (Alhambra)

(Huntington Beach) Oilers vs. Tarbabes (Compton)

Wow!! Please tell me Compton is near the La Brea tar pits. Even so, that's pretty awful sounding.
You there, on the motorbike! Sell me one of your melons!

      "Tarbabes" or "Tarbabies"--?

If the former, it's now a gender issue along with race!

Tarbabes is short for Tartar Babies.

El Camino College Compton Center, formerly Compton College, is the Tartars.

Apparently, the move to change the U. of North Dakota's nickname from the Fighting Sioux to something else is being fought by . . . the Sioux!

          http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/09/us/09nickname.html

. . . some members of the Spirit Lake Tribe, one of two groups of Sioux in the state, say they consider the nickname an honor . . .

North Dakota’s top state lawyers will be in court on Wednesday to oppose members of the Spirit Lake Tribe who have sued to preserve the Fighting Sioux name and logo, an image of an Indian in profile, feathers draping down.
