This is sad beyond words. She thought she was a girl, finds out from the media that she has no womb, and that the entire world seems to think she's just a freak of nature. As the last line of that article says:

    Eighteen years old. Eighteen.

And yet you find words. Your comment is not helping matters. This article has an air of sensationalism about it. I remain skeptical regarding its veracity at this point.

I had always believed that if you have your health, you have half the battle won, and my heart always sank whenever I saw people who were born physically or mentally handicapped. But it would appear that Semenya, who is one of the healthiest people on the planet, has proven me wrong. And by the way bijanc, I'm happy to find out that one of my fellow track and field fans also reads The Root.

Sigh. Try not to make this about me (or you). It's a tragic situation, that we can learn something from. Discretion.

This is not about you or me. However, this story about Semenya being on suicide watch appears to be a false story, an attempt at manipulation, and if you cannot see that, well...
However, you claim "we can learn from this." Well, I haven't learned much of anything from this.I already knew what you apparently learned. Tell me, what have you learned from this situation? My advice to you is not to believe much of what you read, especially when it appears so palpably false.

You could be right. What 'we' (and I don't mean you or me - I mean entities like international sports bodies) need to learn from this is that when we throw someone under the bus, as we did here, lives can be ruined. Both the SA federation and the IAAF handled this poorly. If, as a consequence of this situation, it's handled much more delicately in the future, 'something' would have been learned, and that's a silver lining here. Example here:

              http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/ ... 837646.ece

I hope you're right about it being hype, but I could certainly see how she would be very despondent about her current circumstance.

I think this whole thing would have blown up what ever the IAAF did. Don't you think the media would have run with this story regardless? The only way to prevent the situation was that she did not enter and compete in Berlin. Apparently this was never an option for the SAF.

Then we have yet another 'lesson'. Don't put your citizens in harm's way. Apparently questions of her 'situation' had arisen well before Berlin. They should have done their own tests and brought them to the IAAF.

Wasn't there another track star in a similar situation as Semenya who committed suicide?

Story currently linked on front page here (Headline: SA Federation Chief To Launch Own Semenya Probe ) suggests that Semenya is not on a suicide watch.

Semenya's elder sister Winnie told The Star yesterday that her sister remained calm.

"She is focusing on her studies and training. Caster said she was happy and didn't have any stress."
