  • Mary (of Peter, Paul and Mary) Travers RIP

Mary Travers of Peter, Paul, and Mary has died at age 72.

Of course, if some of you haven't heard of Beyonce or Kanye West, perhaps many of you have no idea who she was. She was a bit before my time, but I have certainly heard their music.

Peter, Paul and Mary were amongst the lyrical poets of my generation...
RIP, Mary, I loved listening to your music.

Ha Ha I actually do know who they are, but I prefer folk music.

That's very sad! I grew up with PP&M's ballads. Mary Travers (esp. in her solo career) was my mother's favorite singer. I will now play their greatest hits on my iTunes, in trubute...

I know all of them. When you work at a University, you gotta keep up with the kids' interests, no matter how old the "kids" are (because some of them are your co-workers!).

To add a bit to your information base, PP & M were leaders in the folk music people in the 1960's who spoke out, with a loud voice, about issues such as civil rights in America. In fact, they marched with Martin Luther King in Selma,
and included him in concerts afterwards, and were instrumental in leading the youth of America towards racial equality. Learn your history, bro....

I'm sure there are hundreds of others.

I know who she was, rasb. My posts was a tongue in cheek response to the ones that preceded it. While I wasnt a fan of their music, my condolences go out to the family and fans of Ms. Travers and PP&M.

You don't think I know history? You'd be surprised. ;-)

I lived a mile and a half from her house in Redding Connecticut. She lived in a nice but unasumming house that was nestled into the woods on a steep hill called Lime Kiln road. It was part of a killer 8 miler i would run twice a week. I always would look as i ran by to see her, never did, but my wife went to her house when she ordered one of her cakes. Nice lady.

Forty years - and more than 500 miles

I first saw PP&M as a teenager in California in the early 1960s. Had all of their albums, knew all of their songs, loved Mary (like every other young man I knew), etc.

Then almost forty years later, I caught them on their reunion tour. In Hong Kong. With all these middle-aged middle-class Chinese fans singing along with all the old favorites.

Mary had gained about forty pounds in the interim. But that was OK - so had I!

I lucked out and got to see them in--of all places!--Boise, Idaho. [Idaho, at least outside of Boise, is quite politically conservative.]

A local organization/foundation (I don't know who or which) used to bring in all kinds of neat boomer-type performers. In a little over two years in the mid-nineties, I saw (among others, memory forgets) PP&M, Don McLean, Carole King (maybe not fair; she just lived down the road 100 or so miles), and even Cornell West.

[No relation to Kanye, for those who just came in.]

West spoke to a standing room only crowd in a huge ballroom; lots of folks were smiling as they heard him referring to people as his (trademark) white brothers, black sisters, Latin brothers, Asian sisters, etc.

first big-name group I ever saw live: Pullman, Washington, in '66 or '67. They were delightfully engaging. As I recall, they had great fun "debunking" the Puff On Grass myth.

After the concert, Peter & Paul went to the coffee house on campus and hung with students until the wee small hours.

Class act all the way. (well, there was that one minor bit of nastiness...)

Never saw them live (although I saw Peter Yarrow live about 15-20 years ago). Loved their music. R.I.P. Mary.

I watched/listened to them but didn't really study them as, say, a real fan might. Not to bring things down, gh, but my curiousity and sense of history is piqued: what was this about?

Please send me a PM is you don't want to marr the tribute thread. Thanks.
