A question. Before weight training became widely accepted in competitive sports (say, post-"Pumping Iron" and "The Incredible Hulk" hit pop culture), how did victims of broken legs (or arms) rebuild their atrophied muscles when they got their casts removed?

Was resistance training around in PT before the NFL, MLB, and NBA came around to accept its benefits?
