He's definitely one of the greats. I consider myself fortunate to have seen him perform live on three occasions.
Red hair and black leather, my favorite color scheme
"1952 Vincent Black Lightning" is from one of my desert island discs, "Rumor and Sigh".

I prefer "The Grammy Song" from "Fame and Wealth". Note that Richard Thompson played on this album.
Last night I dreamed that I won a Grammy
It was presented to me by Debbie Harry
I ran up on stage in my tux
I gulped and I said, "Aw, shucks!"
I'd like to thank my producer—and Jesus Christ

Move this to the "iPod" thread and we're 7 posts closer to 1000.

There's shredding and then there's playing.

On another thread, I said that Joe Pass was the greatest guitar player I ever saw. But the most skilled player I ever saw was Mike Stern.

I admire the skill but to my ears its a guy playing jazz scales for the most part. Also there's virtually no emotion at all.

Just my view which has no value at all to anyone except me.

Ive seen Pass and he was incredible, very creative.

That video is one of the first that I came across. Some of the others either had poor sound quality or didn't really show off his chops. Mainly, I was trying make sure everyone here was aware of him, since a lot these folks are unknown to most people, and I figured you would search for other work by him if he piqued your interest. Here's a video that I think you'll have more of an appreciation for:

A few-hard to pick just one-no particular order.

                            Allan Holdsworth
                            Al DiMeola
                            Eric Johnson
                            Steve Morse
                            Jeff Beck
                            Michael Hedges
                            Joe Satriani
                            John McLaughlin
                            Paco DeLucia
                            Steve Howe
                            Wes Montgomery
                            Pat Metheny
                            Steve Khan

I did see Thompson about three years ago-very good performer including very powerful vocals.

Not a fan of overly technical players like Joe Satriani.

I like it a bit messy but bleeding personality. My favorite of all time is Stevie Ray Vaughn. I don't even care for his genre of music but love everything he ever put out.
