  • you really shouldn't bang your head against the wall?!

This just in, playing football may be mad for your mental health:

<<...A synopsis of a study commissioned by the National Football League (NFL) and performed by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research, was distributed to league officials this month. It reported that Alzheimer’s disease and similar memory-related diseases appear to have occur among NFL players far more often than in the general public. Among the ages for men of 30 - 49, in fact, the rate is 19 times the normal rate that for the normal population....>>

Nice Freudian slip - you WOULD have to be crazy to let 300-lb men run at you at full speed and hit you as hard as they could!

I wonder if a similar study has been done on Parkinsons and boxing? Or even Alzheimers and boxing?

          Thanks tandf

          Excerpt:

Dementia pugilistica, the severe form of chronic traumatic brain injury,[2] commonly manifests as declining mental and physical abilities such as dementia and parkinsonism.

I remember years ago watching an episode of Donahue where he had former heavyweight champs on stage in sort of a round table discussion. Man it was sad what their profession had appeared to have done to them. Present I believe were Norton, Frazier, Ali, Holmes, and Foreman. Maybe someone else.

Foreman was the only one whose speech I could understand presumably because he took a 20 year hiatus from the sport.

As for football I believe I've noticed it in some of them too but no names come to mind. I do know that many have ended up like Vietnam vets of the past unable to manage well.

Repetitive blows to the head are not good for you. Is anybody surprised over such a revelation?

Seems like a "no-brainer" to me. Hockey is another sport where guys play on, even with a history of multiple concussions.

I've been out a few times (fists, ice, et al.). I don't feel good about it but if I had to choose between bad genes or a few concussions I'd pick the latter. I'm not saying if dementia runs in your family history you're doomed but it's a concern, as Ron Reagan Jr. has written about.

Any Fb/hockey player that has several dings needs to think about getting out of the biz.

NHL Hockey still allows hits that the NFL banned 50 years ago.

When I was about 3, I used to bang my head on various surfaces (wall, floor, concrete sidewalk, glass door -- subsequently broken, etc...) when I was upset. It must be the Canuck thing...

NFL dementia study may be flawed.
