Bit more than that - here are the South American bid cities:

      Brásilia, Brazil (1/0/0): 2000.
      Buenos Aires, Argentina (7/0/0): 1936, 1940, 1956EG, 1956OG, 1968, 2004, 2008.
      Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (7/1/0): 1936, 1940, 1956EG, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016.

They've only started doing the limiting the cities to a final group for the vote since 2004. In 2004 Buenos Aires made the final round of five, but was the first one out.

          The chart isn't quite right.

Chicago was awarded the Games for 1904, but the event was subsequently transferred to St. Louis to coincide with the Louisiana Purchase International Exposition.

            Finalists Cities Since 1960?

Is there any way of finding out what the IOC's four final cities were from the Rome Games forward? Such a list would really speak to when certain corners of the world gained the prestige and status to be so considered (i.e. The Far East in '64).

There were never "four final" cities from Rome 1960 onwards. The change was made in the voting for the 2004 Athens Olympics, when it was decided that too many cities for bidding for the Olympics, so in 1997, the IOC formed and Evaluation Committee that eliminated several of the less deserving candidates. There is no mandate for it be a final four - it has been three and five over the past few years. Since the votes for the 2004 Olympics, the following is how they have gone:

              2004
              Host City: Athens, Greece
Final Candidate Cities: Rome, Italy; Cape Town, South Africa; Stockholm, Sweden; Buenos Aires, Argentina
Eliminated Candidate Cities: Istanbul, Turkey; Lille, France; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Seville, Spain; St. Petersburg, Russia.
              The Bid:
              Rd1 tie Rd2 Rd3 Rd4
              Athens, Greece 32 -- 38 52 66
              Rome, Italy 23 -- 28 35 41
              Cape Town, South Africa 16 62 22 20 --
              Stockholm, Sweden 20 -- 19 -- --
              Buenos Aires, Argentina 16 44 -- -- --

Bid voting at the 104th IOC Session in Lausanne on 5 September 1997. Because of the number of candidate cities, an Evaluation Commission of the IOC was nominated whose task was to pare the number of candidates down to a more workable four or five prior to the final vote. There were six eliminated cities as listed above.

              2008
              Scheduled Host City: Beijing, China
Final Candidate Cities: Istanbul, Turkey; Osaka, Japan; Paris, France; Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Complete IOC site selection vote history:
                http://www.aldaver.com/votes.html

People often forget that Tokyo was originally awarded the 1940 games (they even cleared the land for the Olympic Park and built several facilities), before their war in China and the beginnings of WW2 stopped the whole thing. So Japan was on the Olympic radar long before '64, but it took them several years to recover from the war before they could mount another successful bid.

                    Motown Miss

What's a little rioting and looting between friends (after Motown had helped put it on the mod map)?

                    18/X/1963 Baden-Baden, West Germany 60 votes- for 1968 Games

                    RESULTS:

                    Detroit. USA 14
                    Lyon. France 12

Why don't the rounds add up the same? Typo?

                          96 votes in rounds 1 & 3, but only 95 in round 2.

Based on this, looks like basically all the Chicago votes went directly to Rio.

I get 94 in round 1, but what do I know about addin'? I only got 20 fingers 'n' toes.

My ol' hometown (Detroit) made a few good runs at it, didn't they? Back when it was the wealthiest city in the country, before its long, sad, deep decline.

Would have been the first truly international games, since there were plans in all those bids to site some venues in adjacent Windsor Ontario. And even a rather fanciful plan to build the main stadium on a giant platform over the river between the two cities.
