Why don't they protect their faces better, the way youth hockey, or women do, is beyond me. The argument of "having obstructed vision" is totally lame. You adjust.

Nash, of course, was a hockey player before he turned to hoops!

Much better as a soccer player - he was/is fantastic at that sport --- do you ever watch him keep the ball alive with a few touches, after the whistle has gone, and then lift the ball casually (with his foot) to the ref.... Occasionally, when back in Victoria, he plays the odd sandlot soccer game (just for fun), with Simon Whitfield and a few others... Steve's brother, Martin, is a professional soccer player in Vancouver, played pro. in England for a while. Apparently, Steve was at least as good as Martin in kids soccer...
As for the mental toughness of the man, did you hear his quote, after his eye got smashed up, went for 6 stitches (no anaesthesia), came back and shot the lights out, with one eye closed in the 4th quarter? He said that a lot of the guys he played sports with in Victoria already tell him that basketball is a bit of a wussy sport, and they would never let him live it down if he didn't get stitched up, and play well in the 4th quarter..... Warrior !!!
