  • Another Ignorant Athlete Running Off At The Mouth

I think the saying goes that it is better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you're an idiot than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. I expect that when the season starts, some of his fellow baseball players will make Luke Scott wish he had kept his mouth shut. Too bad he's not a football player.

    Luke Scott said:
[Obama] does not represent America. Nor does he represent anything what our forefathers stood for.
Does anyone have a link to a web page that outlines this argument, it's a new one to me. Which part of 'what our forefathers stood for' does Obama go against?

I like Scott's other quote about how people vote in order to get "free stuff".
This from a guy who, by my figuring, gets $24,722 dollars for every baseball game he plays regardless of whether his team wins or loses... no, wait, he gets paid that much for every game his team plays even if Scott sits on the bench. Unless maybe he gives back $24,722 everytime he spends a game in the dugout. Probably he does, right?

Me, I'd play for 1/100th of Scott's salary. That would be a bit over $40,000 per year. He hit .284 last year and I bet I could hit maybe .006, which would mean twice the bang for the buck from the plate! Even better, I'd take my 40k dollars, be happy as hell with the job and keep my mouth shut!

        Here's the pertinent excerpts:

Obama does not represent America. Nor does he represent anything what our forefathers stood for. This country is basically built on an attitude. It's a way of life. It's not because you're born here. It's not that you're supposed to take from those who have and give to those who haven't. . . . That's what communism does. . . . Obama . . . represents, "Hey, everyone. Give me votes and I'll give you stuff." . . . That's not what makes this country great. That's what tears down a people, tears down nations. . . . Now, it's OK for me to cheat, to steal, to step on somebody, to cheat somebody, to do something to make someone [else] fall, so I can get ahead in life. . . . Whereas, the former attitude of America was, "I'm going to work my tail off, and if it doesn't work out for me ... "
It's clear his context is that Obama is a 'commie-pinko Robin Hood", stealing from the rich and giving it to the poor, which, in itself is a mixed message, cuz we liked it when Robin Hood did it!

So Scott sees himself, and your forefathers, as King John?

I see a lot more in his comments than that, and I'm quite sure you would be hard-pressed to find Americans who share my demographics who don't. These kind of comments have a long history in this country and bring back bad memories for many of us. In no way am I questioning your sincerity in giving him the benefit of the doubt, but I hope you understand why I don't.

This is a very left wing article from a little over a year ago that tries to explain the underlying reasons the "birther" conspiracy is out there.

              http://www.alternet.org/story/141587/

              Pertinent quote:
Like all conspiracy theories, it springs from the fertile soil of collective denial. Unlike all conspiracy theories, it thrives on a deep-rooted, racist belief: that a black man with a foreign name could never have won the presidency in the United States through anything other than trickery, deception or fraud.
I'm not sure if I agree with the whole article, but many parts ring true. I hope this doesn't get this thread deleted.

So a dumb baseball player is a birther. What else is new? If all you did was listen to Rush and Fox News you too would be a birther.

"Blogger-activist Mike Stark has been staking out Capitol Hill recently, trying to get Republican congressmen on the record about whether or not they believe President Obama was born in the United States. Only a couple of GOP congressmen were willing to state without reservation that Obama is the legal and constitutional President of the United States. Many others said they “think there are questions” and would “like to see the documents.” Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) began running away from Stark — literally — to avoid answering the question. Another congressman avoided Stark by hiding in a book store and pretending to look at pens."

I know what you see and why you think you see it. His words, taken at face value, do not support that view. I also know that I may not be in a position to see what IS there, so I do not deny your 'right' to hold that position.

So Scott's rationale is that "our forefathers stood for" no foreign born presidents?

What is the birther movements argument against the certificate that Obama did produce in 2008? Isn't that the same thing as the one Scott could:

go — within 10 minutes — to my filing cabinet and I can pick up my real birth certificate

Daisy, Daisy, Daisy...Sadly you don't understand...This isn't Socialist Europe where common sense still has a hold. This is America, Land of the Free, and the Ignorant!

Obama could have the Birth Certificate printed on his forehead, and they would still deny it....

Frankly, they probably would have tried this with Clinton, except: A) They didn't think of it. B) He 'looks Grade A American'.

The foreign-birth comment had nothing to do with the 'forefather's' comment. See my excerpt above. He's 'ignorant' in both regards, but he did not conjoin the two issues.

I guess that explains my confusion. I'm looking for something that does not exist.

The truth is Luke Scott isn't a "real" American, nor are most of the posters on the board, including myself, except for lonewolf and I believe he's only one half American.
