Is the UST&F doing anything to address this crisis? Not every one can make the NFL, NBA so why not try and scoop up some of those who don't make the cut? African American males are the best athletes in the world and our current crop of black men in track is simply not up to par!!

Re: Lack of interest from African American men in track
Are they going the same route as White American Males, the former best athletes in the world. Both are getting fat and lazy in the hammock of civilization. Time for all of us to move to Nigeria and find the talent eager for training.

I don't know the direction MTB was trying to go with the post, but actual numbers could help answer the question to the problem...if there is a problem.
Basketball and football tryouts at a random, predominantly African American HS may attract (hypothetically) 60 eager guys trying to make the cut. If similar tryouts were held for track, you may likely have 20 guys showing up. Typically there's no need to make the "cut" since the overall interest isn't that high with T&F. You show up and attend practices -- you're on the team.

Re: Lack of interest from African American men in track
I always hear this story about Football and Basketball sniping all the better athletic talents ergo the US not as potent as they can be in track and field and Track & Field Competitions. I hereby call that out as bullshit in Penn & Teller way.

I believe NCAA regulations would generally allow that. And schools recruit JUCO transfers anyway, so why not recruit your own wide receiver to run some track?

Re: Lack of interest from African American men in track
Well lets go out on a branch and humor the thought ; "there are less African American Males available these days for track and field because of football and basket ball"
This argument considers several ideas:
1. African American Males are best at Track and Field
2.To another degree if others will allow the thought, males of West african decent living in the western hemisphere are also good at track & Field.
3.The more African Americans there are, the better the probability of winning.
4.The pool of African Amercan males needed to make a good national track team is so great that the pool of said ethinicity involved in basketball or football significantly derails recruiting efforts for T&F purposes.
Lets see:
To win you compete, which means if AAM are not doing as well as they can then either the AAMs are not as good as they can be or the competition is better or both.
1. African American Males are best at Track and Field
Canont be debated as even the man from Mars will say that Martian men are the best.
2.To another degree if others will allow the thought, males of West african decent living in the western hemisphere are also good at track & Field.
Also canont be debated as even the man from Mars will say that Martian men are the best.
3.The more African Americans there are, the better the probability of winning.
If 1 and 2 are correct then we see USA having 38,919,319 African Americans (Alone- not mixed)
taking it 50/50 males to females works out to about 19,500,000 AAMs. The competition lets say the Caribbean...last 2001 census shows 6,468,870 persons (perdominantly of West African decent) yields a number of 3,205,700 males of predominantly W.African decent .
4.The pool of African Amercan males needed to make a good national track team is so great that the pool of said ethinicity involved in basketball or football significantly derails recruiting efforts for T&F purposes.
19,500,000 AAMs to be shared among football, Basketball and T&F Vs. eg 3,205,700 Caribbean males of west African decent which shall we say exclusively participate in T&F and no other sport.

Re: Lack of interest from African American men in track
Sorry, but I find the very premise of this post/subject to be ignorant, misguided and racist, frankly.
one can apply same logic about participation in track of best athletes across all categories. fact is, however, that the creme tends to rise to the top, regardless of race. one could say that a lot of potentially good sprinter, jumper and middle distance runners in Europe and South America are lost to soccer.
people also often assume that USA men's soccer would be much stronger if our "best" athletes were in the sport.
anyway, it's not about white or black. the numbers and talent issue cuts across a lot of sports in different ways in different countries. generally speaking, though, the truly greatest potential sprinters, jumpers and throwers wind up in track and competing in those events.
another point: everyone talks about track's downward slide in the USA. that's actually old news and the trend has actually been very positive over the last 4-5 years. the sport is back on the upswing in the USA and internationally. in the US, if the stars and role models are there, good young athletes will see them and want to emulate them. track is more professionalized now that ever before. great athletes know that if they're good enough, they can get a nice contract and make money on the international circuit.
