  • R.I.P.--Richie Havens

    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/23/ar...t-72.html?_r=0

Another connection to my youth is gone. First saw him at the 1967 Berkeley 4th of July Folk Festival, then many times at small clubs in Greenwich Village, Got to meet him many years later as he was entering Madison Square Garden for the Bob Dylan tribute show. A legend in folk circles, but he was most famous, of course, for his opening performance at Woodstock.

Haven't followed him in quite a few years, but his album "Mixed Bag" in 1967 got me interested in using open guitar tunings. His versions of "Follow", "Handsome Johnny", and "Just Like a Woman" were great cuts from that album.. "Follow" is still among my all time favorites.

Just saw this; yes, another one from my formative music years is gone.

Here's a good video of his cover of the Beatles' Here Comes the Sun. Love it.

And my favorite Richie Havens song, and the first Richie Havens song I ever heard, "Follow"....

"....Then don't mind me, 'cause I ain't nothin', but a dream....."
