During the troubles in the mid 90s Belfast had the same reputation...at the University in Nottingham I knew a few professors who had taught at Queen's College in Belfast and expected to hear stories of daily shootings...but no it was pretty normal with the violence in isolated areas...

Should have asked them about the 70s.

Not quite sure how that implies in this case ....The murder rate is indeed troubling..but most of the city is fairly normal and the murder rate is below what it was 20 or 30 years ago......not something a lot of people realize....last year driving to Portland Airport I talked to the fellow pumping gas and I mentioned I was flying to Chicago....all he talked about was the violence as if I was flying to Kabul or Baghdad....

Chicago always had a reputation for violence primarily because of the Untouchables stuff....one reason Chicagoans loved Michael Jordan was when you traveled and they found out you were from Chicago the first thing mentioned was Al Capone....
