Not sure it would be called major, but Vaasa has hosted a few European Cup events (lower divisions, not the Super League) and it is further north.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think Tampere, FIN is the northernmost host ever for an international track & field championships. Probably right near the top, too, for just about any Olympic sport. (It is slightly north of Lillehammer, NOR).
Has Reykjavik ever hosted anything major (excluding chess)?

And it looks like Harvey Mudd is second; it is the former academic home for our own JRM (also, the computer facilities I used in grad school were on the Mudd campus, so I was in that room many hours most days for several years (with eventual success). The computer center would often get mail for Mudd, Harvey C.
