The other day it was raining at school. No high winds, no lightning . . . just a hard steady rain. Most of the walkways are covered, but the administration would not let the kids out of class till it let up!

I grew up in Connecticut and we had, maybe, one snow day every other year.

As a general rule in Massachusetts, it depends on the timing of the storm and then the intensity. A storm which starts late one day and finishes before school starts allowing plows to clear streets will have fewer outages for the same snow amounts as one which starts just before school starts and will go all day long meaning the roads will be more dangerous later in the day when buses and parents need to get kids home.

I have no idea what the modern rules might be, but when I was growing up in cold & frozen British Columbia, the concept of a "snow day" would have been met with hoots of laughter.

What's weird is that Massachusetts is considered weird because people have health insurance and are well-educated. Only in America!
