How much snow does it take to close the schools in the US?

The other day it was raining at school. No high winds, no lightning . . . just a hard steady rain. Most of the walkways are covered, but the administration would not let the kids out of class till it let up!
I grew up in Connecticut and we had, maybe, one snow day every other year.

A storm which starts late one day and finishes before school starts allowing plows to clear streets will have fewer outages for the same snow amounts as one which starts just before school starts and will go all day long meaning the roads will be more dangerous later in the day when buses and parents need to get kids home.
