Not sure it would be called major, but Vaasa has hosted a few European Cup events (lower divisions, not the Super League) and it is further north.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think Tampere, FIN is the northernmost host ever for an international track & field championships. Probably right near the top, too, for just about any Olympic sport. (It is slightly north of Lillehammer, NOR).

Having just been to Colorado, I can attest to the fact that everyone seems to be out running, biking, hiking, kayaking!
On the flip side, being in Deep South, I do declare that's it's just too hot to do anything in the summer except sit out on the veranda sipping mint juleps.
