Mr. Parsell, who did the book, passed away in June. Under his obit is link to an article about him.

Decoration Day originated in the South circa 1866-68 to honor Confederate dead, spread to North to honor dead of all wars.. It was still called Decoraton Day when I was young. Red paper poppy wreaths were a significant fund raising feature of the day.
