  • Captain Phillips

A great movie, with a great role, and return to form, for Tom Hanks. The Director did 2 of the "Bourne" movies so you know the action is going to be fast and furious. All the SEALS are real SEALS and all the hijackers are Somali (now in the U.S.) . Early in the movie, as the pirates are first bearing down on the Alabama, attempts to radio for help, are to no avail: “There’s no answer at the U.S. maritime emergency line!” Truth is stranger than fiction.

    My question has always been

How on earth did the pirates think they could hijack a USA cargo ship with impunity?

    Chance of death - 99%
Chance of life imprisonment - 1%
    Chance of success - 0%

They had to be catastrophically ignorant of Realpolitik (which, given their lack of education, is the obvious answer).

      The answer is: Khat.

Those are about the same set of odds I'd have given the 9/11 plotters.
Bad odds don't deter certain people.
As for the film, if Hanks doesn't win an Oscar it will be a travesty.

He's going to have competition. From what I'm reading Robert Redford in "All Is Lost" is getting raves, and without any dialog. Benedict Cumberbatch is in the running, and I'm sure "12 Years A Slave" will garner nominations as well. Then there's Forest Whitaker for "The Butler."

Finally saw Capt Phillips...enjoyed a thrilling movie but was bothered by recent claims by several members of the ship's crew that it tain't so. They say the ship was indeed hi-jacked by Somali pirates but the entire sequence of events is largely fictional and scripted, that Phillips was not a hero, was not taken onto a pirate lifeboat and the ships engineer was the real hero of the story.
But it was a good movie.... not a film, as I understand the distinction.

Yeah, it's a movie and movies never recreate reality, at best they tell a story.
The story disputing the one told in the movie is apparently a version of events put forward by litigants in a a lawsuit.
I have no idea whether either story approximates the truth, but it is still a terrific movie!

Bruce Dern should also be in the running for the Best Actor for that small movie whose name I don't recall, nor did I yet see. It seems like 2013 is a strong year for best actor performances.

Thanks jeremyp for bailing me out for having been too lazy to look it up. I've always liked Dern, even before I knew of his running connection. I read recently that John Wayne told him that the public would hate him for back shooting him in the "Cowboys", and that Dern replied that they'd love him in San Francisco for it! (Now that my daughter lives in San Francisco I've told her to see "The Laughing Policeman", the new Woody Allen Movie, and "Bullitt.")
"Captain Phillips" and "12 Years a Slave" are both on my to see list..
