Easily in the top 10 of all time. Sometimes he even dominated the great Pele. He was more of a physical force than Pele and was a bit taller. I never saw him "live" but i have visited Benfica's stadium in Lisboa, Estadio da Luz

Maybe we'd have had to been in Portugal to hear him called "Rei."

I never heard him called Black Panther, or King for that matter. Once I saw him play live, not sure whether it was Slovan Bratislava-Benfica or Czechoslovakia-Portugal. It was around 1960, if memory serves.

An obituary and a sports section article that I read today in the N.Y. Times just referred to him as the "Black Panther." So I googled "The Black Pearl of Mozambique", and the Wikipedia entry headlines three nicknames, these two and "Rei" which means king - I guess in Portugese.

I just read something referring to him as the Black Panther and my reaction was "no , no, the black pearl", as referred to by Pego. Did he have a second nickname?
