Who wouldn't wanna have your own pirate radio station? How cool would that be? A few hours a night, maybe 12=3. Kinda like Wolfman Jack (not that he was a pirate
) and "who is this guy?" remember that?
While I'm basically a blues guy, sort of an historian in that I know all those old primitive (20's-30;s) cats (dates/origins) and own most of it, up into the days of Muddy, the Wolf, the other Sonny Boy, Hooker and Lightnin' etc. But I also enjoy other stuff. If we could play DJ, I'd go with four song sets then explain what was heard maybe a little history/story about the artists, the song.
The main thing is set a mood, and a smooth transition from one tune to the next keeping that smooth mood. The word..flow...would work.
Volcano, Damien Rice

She Don't Know, JJ Grey and MOFRO

Arms of a Woman, Amos Lee

Uncertain, Dylan LeBlanc

So if you were to attempt this what four song set would it be? Remember a mood and a smooth flow.
I like to go with themes, ya know...trains, prison, wicked wimmen, crawling kingsnakes, hard times, etc,
You could make a night of it working off the "House of the Rising Sun" theme. Obviously you'd want a little distance between covers of the Clarence Ashley 1933 original. There's where your creativity comes in. Of course everyone always thinks of Eric Burdon and the Animals but it's an old tune that goes back to before Ashley, nobody seems to know it's true origins. The Callahan Brothers, Georgia Turner (very primitive) and Leadbelly all did covers prior to 1945, Waylon Jennings (yep!) does a great job in the mid 60's. Bob Dylan also does a great cover on his debut album ..Bob Dylan.
Then there's this....

Notice it keeps with the mood?
