^When I saw the topic of this thread, I remembered at least the part of that song with that # in it, but not the answer to your question or who performed it. Just looked it up, and realized that I probably never knew any of that info in the first place, though the refrain with the # is definitely still in my head.
speaking of pop music phone numbers - this song was big when I was dating my future bride - it has to be one of the all-time earwormiest songs ever - once you think of it, it just stays there and plays the chorus over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over . . .
Fast forward to the 1980s- who answers when you dial 867-5309?
I won $50 in a local radio station contest using that number back in '82. There were numbers on the cap seal of Pepsi bottles, and you had to enter a 7-digit sequence. Not sure if it was a random draw, or some sort of pseudo-payola. Oh well. It was a lot of money for a 10 year old.
867 was one of our local exchanges when that song came out. I remember thinking that the owner of that number probably wasn't too happy with that song.
