  • What is the Mount Rushmore of Mounts

Stole this from another board, but it's a fun question:

What are the four mounts on Mount Rushmore?

My four: Everest, Olympus, Vesuvius, Blanc (with an allowance for French spelling!)

K2 is a better looking mountain than Everest. Same with Kanchenjunga.

After DQing Everest and its Himalayan brethren for professionalism I'm left with (not in order)

          Matterhorn
          Eiger
          Shasta
          Fuji-san

Mount Damavand in Iran is supposedly incredibly beautiful.

I was thinking of K-2 and the Matterhorn, but disqualified them for not being "Mount X."

              YMMV.

                  Mount Kancamagus
                  Mount Chocorua
                  Mount Washington
                  Mount Morgan

All my hiking trails in New Hampshire - Kancamagus is also one of my bike rides - nice climb

Mt. LeConte in Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains NP. One of the highest points east of the Mississippi at 6593 ft. Home of the LeConte Lodge, a unique lodge that has no electricity, which you have to hike to. Highest inn in the eastern US. Supplies are delivered via helicopter and llama. On Bucket List.

For beauty, my four picks (until someone reminds me of something I may have forgotten), are:
                      K2
                      Trango Towers
                      Matterhorn
                      Half Dome

West face of Gasherbrum IV (7925m), at the head of the Baltoro Glacier near K2, is, for my money, one of the most awesome mountain faces in the world (seen it only in photos.) Also impressive because the mountain has only been summited four times (with two "almosts") and the West face has only been successfully climbed once, in 1985. That ascent did not reach the true summit as the two climbers were completely maxed out when they reached the top of the face and the summit ridge, having spent about a week on the face, with dicey climbing on poorly protected marble, open bivouacs at least twice due to lack of suitable places to pitch even a tiny two man tent, and no fuel to melt water the last two or three days. It remains one of the top three or four all-time great alpine-style ascents (lightweight, single-push, as oppose to expedition style, siege tactics) of a major Himalayan or Karakoram peak. Some great photos on the Internet of the sun setting on the face.
