  • Athletes who smoke

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/multim ... ent.1.html

32 pictures of sports figures smoking. I never knew Jack Nicklaus had smoked. I heard today that Ben Crenshaw was smoking at the Masters. No T&F athletes in the gallery, but I think Brian Oldfield was a smoker. I think some other throwers, too.

He was not a nationally known athlete but 40 years ago I knew a doctor in Fort Worth, the top Masters distance runner in Texas (4:40 mile, 2: 40 marathon, as I remember) who smoked. He was a life long smoker, even as a distance star at Baylor twenty years prior, and said he could not kick the habit.

I also know a 2:2x marathoner who's a regular, albeit not very heavy smoker.

Ditto Eric Backman, long-distance multiple medallist in 1920.

I believe Michel Jazy may have smoked some.
The great French mountaineer Louis Larchanel smoked, but a number of climbers smoked back then. (I think there may have been the belief that it was actually beneficial.)

Ron Hill talked about smoking when he was in his prime. Don't know if he still does?

there was a time in the '70s and '80s when I suspect the correct answer would be "all French vaulters"

I recall that he did, some, mostly out of training season. However, In "The Lonely Breed" Elliott is described as smoking several cigarettes on a flight (to Perth?) for a race with Merv Lincoln...which of course he won.

Hot Rod Hundley said of the '60's Lakers, only West did not smoke cigs. The sportswriter Ira Berkow told me Baylor smoked. JoJo White and Henry Aaron smoked. NFL teams of that era had packs and packs inside the locker room f/ halftime. John Carlos didn't necessarily smoke, but there are article abou him betting guys beers on various things.
