    Secret in Their Eyes

    Friday Night Enveiglement:
I knew nothing about this film/movie except that Niciole Kidman and Julia Robert were in it. I did not know it was remake of a 1992 Argentine film. I am glad I was ignorant about the movie/film because I thought I enjoyed it until I got home, googled it to clarify a plot twist and found almost unanimous unfavorable reviews by the professional critics. wtf ????

Shake it off, bro. Like what you like. At least one nationally respected critic, Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times liked it, to wit (from metacritic.com):

What DOESN’T get lost in translation is what made “El Secreto De Sus Ojos” so effective: the visceral, devastating empathy we feel when a horrible injustice is committed and it ruins multiple lives; the haunted looks in the eyes of a trio of characters who will never be able to shake off the events of long ago; the lush and lurid film noir touches; and the air of melancholy hanging heavy over a pursuit of justice, because we know there’s no such thing as true justice, not in these circumstances.

Admittedly, my judgement may have been affected by lingering Eyes Wide Shut and Pretty Woman hangover.

It was not a 1992 Argentinian film it was 2009, and it won Oscar for best foreign film, a category created to appease those who think foreign films are generally superior(of late), and from what I hear this is an inferior product. No surprise, remakes are usually inferior.

Ok, I got the dates confused, Maybe the 2009 film was based on a 1992 crime. or something... anyway, it fooled me, was good enuff I did not have to take a single men's room break. .

And in regard to this movie he is very much in the minority with his Critic buddies.

On another note I find it charming when recently asked by the Ticket cashier "you do know it's in subtitles?" To which I want to respond: "as long as they're in English." We then watched a German movie that is their nominee for Foreign Oscar.......with 2 other people.....who were German. Another time we told our waiter we were going to see a Polish film. To which he said: "you guys speak Polish?"

Did they reshoot the famous football field long take? That's about the only thing that interests me for the remake...

That was a classic shot, almost as if the camera had been attached to a parachutist.
