Who else??
Seriously, I thought he deserved such prizes DECADES ago!
Whether through individual song lyrics, or through his full body of work, he deserved it!
(I always felt the same way about Allen Ginsberg!!)
Forget his voice, the band's music, or the fact they're listed as "Songs".
READ the following lyrics in awe!
Chimes of Freedom
It's Alright, Ma
A Hard Rain's-a-Gonna Fall
Like a Rolling Stone
Desolation Row
Visions of Johanna
Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands
Idiot Wind
Simple Twist of Fate
Mississippi
Tryin' to Get to Heaven
Thunder On the Mountain
Early Roman Kings
and 100's more!!
Read his memoir---Chronicles: Volume 1.
Read his early album's liner notes!
Read the book "Lyrics: 1962 to 2001".
(Add the individual song/lyrics books for "Modern Times" and "Tempest".)
A well-deserved award!

Trenchant lyrics for our times . . .
The Times They Are a-Changin'
"Come senators, congressmen please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside and it's ragin'
It'll soon…"

He just was great from the beginning and he kept getting better.
I thought he reached his apex at blonde on blonde but it might have been blood on the tracks.
Had a way of telling stories that was detailed enough to totally captivate you but open enough to leave you wondering.
It would be a real heart breaker if this Nobel prize diminished his reputation.Last edited by user4; 10-13-2016, 06:21 PM.

You think Pynchon and DeLillo and Roth and Oates are great writers? Hah! They're not even up to the standards of a good pop singer.

Sat down at the piano today and cranked out "Tangled up in Blue" just for old times sake.

Before Dylan---
She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah!
My girl--talking about my girl!
After Dylan
NO lyric---I said ZERO lyrics NOT influenced by Bob Dylan!
He literally---and I mean LITERALLY!!!---changed the entire landscape of pop song lyricism!!
Ride on, Bob!

I would agree that his best work was in the mid-60's - Desolation Row, mentioned by gh, It's alright ma I'm only bleeding, and various works from Blonde on Blonde, but if we're taking someone still alive whose best work was 45 years old, why not Pynchon [V and Gravity's Rainbow], or someone slightly more recent [T.C Boyle]

The New Republic did an advance story on this a week ago. The headline was:
>>Who Will Win the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature?
Not Bob Dylan, that's for sure.<<
Somewhere in the middle of a long discussion, listing and categorizing mentioning 75 possibilities, the writer says:
>> Bob Dylan 100 percent is not going to win. Stop saying Bob Dylan should win the Nobel Prize.<<
