As bad as it looks on the surface, I think that the hotel is just trying to make a blanket claim that they have no responsibility to the victims of the shooting. Rather than arguing a 1000 lawsuits filed by each victim, they countersue in an attempt to make a blanket judgement. They are not asking for anything from the victims, just trying to get off the hook from any lawsuits.

Will it work? I don't know. But either way, there will be a judgement about their responsibility in the shooting.
