Just out of curiosity, is grampa Flowers still alive? He was, in my memory, one of the few reasonable southern politicos of the bad old days.

I believe he is. Yes he took a lot of grief back in those days. Atlanta had several good guys. Mayor Ivan Allen, who passed away recently, was one. Another good Southern good guy was Ralph E. McGill, "The Conscience of the South." Pulitzer prize winner, editor of the Atlanta Constitution. He is also alum of a noted Southern prep school which was attended by a T&FN staffer on here.

            Flowers' kids

Richmond III was a nice player at Duke, a receiver who tried out for the CFL's Argos.

Which he claimed resulted from his enforcement of integration laws.

The AP news story about his passing mentioned that "son and grandson were star football players." Alas no mentioned of son's track stardom.
