Re: Phelps Arrested for Drunken Driving
JMO but I think society has gotten too carried away with this. Yes it is a serious thing. Yes there are many alcohol-related accidents and fatalities. Yes even the first offense should be punished. But after a few years of no incidents, offenders should be able to clear their record. This should not hurt their ability to get a job, etc.
The problem is, you can get a DUI after just a couple of drinks, if a cop or solicitor wants to get you.
Most people probably have gotten behind the wheel when they shouldn't have. Phelps shouldn't suffer for the rest of his life because of this. This does not make him a bad person. Our own president of the US has a DUI. And Cheney has two!
MADD has enormous power and lawmakers do basically whatever they say.

Re: Phelps Arrested for Drunken Driving
It sounds like Phelps handled the situation with humility and contiued to show the class that he displayed at the Olympics. Better to be caught and reformed. This is a lesson to him and fortunately to all his fans. Some good will come of this.
Cheney has two?? It's amazing how this stuff never comes out. You can forgive once but twice?

Re: Phelps Arrested for Drunken Driving
Kimmel had a good bit on this last night. They re-enacted the cop pulling his car over. When the car door opened, a bunch of water poured out. Then "Phelps" got out, wearing googles, swim cap, and speedos, all his Olympic medals jangling around his neck.

"In addition, he has to speak to students at several schools about the dangers of consuming alcohol"
well, if he had had a slump in finding girlfriends, this ruling will cure that
what was that about Wilt, 20,000+ ?

Mrs. tandfman and I took a defensive driving course the other night. (Taking the course reduces our insurance by 10%, which makes it worth doing.) One of the things that they told us (and that was stated in the instruction booklet they handed out) is that in Bulgaria, the penalty for a second offense for DUI is death. In El Salvador, you never get to commit a second offense; the penalty for the first offense is execution by a firing squad!
